Common Failure Symptoms

Common Failure Symptoms

2016-2018 Volvos with 4-cylinder engines were equipped with electrically heated thermostat. It is very common for these heating elements to short out and permanently damage the ECM. As a result, ECM will post one or more of the codes below. In many cases diagnostic codes for Leak Diagnostic Pump as well. Also, it is not uncommon for the ECM to permanently lose communication on the network. It is extremely important that the heated thermostat housing is replaced, prior to installing a remanufactured ECM.

Shorted thermostat heater codes

• ECM-P059700.
• ECM-P059800.
• ECM-P05990.
• P0597.
• P0171 “Thermostat Heater Control Circuit”.
• New Thermostat heater was installed, and codes still won’t clear.

In 2024, we have constructed a state-of-the-art Volvo VEA ECM tester that is capable of fully testing these complex modules. This includes turbocharged, supercharged and hybrid versions. In addition to the thermostat issues mentioned above. We can now test and repair all failures within these modules. This includes problems with:

• Fuel injectors.
• Ignition coils.
• 5 V sensor reference voltage supply.
• Electric coolant pump.
• Radiator cooling fan.
• A/C compressor clutch.
• Throttle body.
• Leak diagnostic pump.
• Turbo wastegate.
• Turbo bypass valve.
• Supercharger bypass valve.
• Supercharger air pressure.
• Supercharger clutch.
• VVT intake and exhaust.
• Camshaft position sensors intake and exhaust.
• Crankshaft position sensor.
• EVAP valve.
• MAP sensor.
• MAF sensor.
• ECT sensor.
• Oil pressure/temperature sensor.
• Oil pump.
• Fuel pressure sensor.
• Front, mid and rear O2 sensors.
• LIN bus communication.
• CAN bus communication.
